4 People Killed, Dozens of Houses Collapse in Merowe Due to Floods and Rains

At least 4 people were killed, including children, while dozens of houses were destroyed in the Merowe locality in the Northern State, especially in the areas of Osli, Masawi, Al-Qarir, Al-Karu, Nouri, Karima, and Hazima, as a result of torrential floods and heavy rains that hit the locality last night and this morning (Tuesday), which the region has not witnessed since the fall of 1988
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to the Sudanhorizon news website, the rains caused the death of a mother and her daughter in the Al-Inqaz neighborhood – of Merowe, as a result of an electric shock when the rains fell. According to eyewitnesses, the floods caused a child to drown and immediately killed him in the Al-Hijir area located on the eastern bank of Merowe.
The information added that the torrents flowing heavily east of the Al-Qarir area caused significant material damage and losses, in addition to the collapse of a large number of houses in the Masawi and Awsali areas. The waters are still besieging the Al-Qarir area and Awsali village (2) in New Amri.
The floods cut off the Nawa-Karima road at kilometer (34) and kilometer (36) in the Al-Maqal area, and the Al-Kuru area (Wadi Al-Shakil).
According to the editor of the investigator who visited the affected areas, a large number of families whose homes collapsed completely or partially in the affected areas have become homeless amid fears of the recurrence of rain and the flow of torrents according to weather forecasts.
The week before last, the Merowe locality witnessed rains and floods that swept through the Tangasi area and caused the collapse of the bridge linking Abudum and Merowe. Citizens complained to Sudanhorizon about the shortage of tents, shelter tools, and environmental health supplies, and called on government authorities to expedite the treatment of the damage and invite voluntary organizations to provide assistance.
