Khartoum – Sudanhorizon

The Khartoum Locality Committee for the Exhumation and Relocation of War Victims’ Remains, in coordination with the Forensic Medicine Authority, carried out an operation on Saturday to exhume and rebury the remains of 27 war victims from the Central Market and Local Market areas of Khartoum.

According to the Khartoum Locality Media Office, the victims had been buried in temporary graves during the war under emergency circumstances. The committee said the operation forms part of its ongoing mandate and is being implemented in accordance with directives issued by the locality’s Executive Director.

The committee noted that it has been carrying out its work since December 8, 2025, focusing on relocating war victims’ remains from residential neighborhoods, markets, and public facilities to official cemeteries.

It emphasized that all exhumation and reburial procedures were conducted in compliance with the law, including the filing of official reports, notifying families of the scheduled exhumation and reburial dates, and burying unidentified victims in designated public cemeteries.

The committee added that its work will continue until all targeted sites have been completed before the start of the rainy season.

Khartoum Locality Executive Director Abdel Moneim Al-Bashir praised the efforts of the committee and the Forensic Medicine Authority, saying the initiative forms part of the work of the Higher Committee for Preparing the Environment for the Return of Citizens to Khartoum State.

He reaffirmed the locality’s commitment to supporting the teams involved to ensure the completion of exhumation and reburial operations at all temporary burial sites across the locality.
