WHO Commends Egypt’s Role in Addressing Health Needs of New Sudanese Arrivals

Cairo – Sudanhorizon

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed sincere gratitude to the Government of and people of Egypt for the steadfast commitment and leadership in addressing the needs of Sudanese new arrivals since the onset of the conflict.

WHO said Egypt’s response has played a central role in providing life-saving assistance, including access to essential healthcare, despite the mounting pressures on national systems.

In statement WHO Egypt also said it warmly acknowledges the support of the European Union to the Joint Platform for Refugees and Migrants, which has enabled the timely implementation of the activities outlined in this appeal, stressing that EU’s contribution has been vital in scaling up WHO’s response and strengthening collective efforts to ensure continuity of care and dignity for forcibly displaced populations.

The statement said this support reflects a strong partnership built on shared values of solidarity and humanitarian responsibility
It said Egypt provides all this support despite the country context where Egypt is surrounded by three WHO emergency-graded countries:

Libya (Grade 2 Emergency), Sudan (Grade 3 Emergency), and the occupied Palestinian territory (Grade 3 Emergency).

WHO pointed out that this regional context places a significant burden on Egypt due to its pivotal role both as a humanitarian hub and as a host country for those forcibly displaced.

In addition, it maintained, Egypt is already facing significant economic challenges, including steep price rises and shortages in foreign currency, with repercussions on living standards and poverty rates.
