U.S. State Department Condemns Militia Attacks on Displaced Persons in Zamzam

The U.S. Department of State issued a statement condemning, in the strongest terms, the attacks launched this week by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia on the Zamzam displacement camps in Darfur, Sudan.
The statement, issued on Thursday – the first of its kind to clearly and strongly condemn the RSF militia – stated that the militia’s bombing of the camp resulted in at least eight deaths and many others injured.
The statement expressed regret that the bombing had disrupted the ability of humanitarian organizations to deliver emergency aid supplies to the camp, where more than half a million people are seeking shelter, in an area previously declared to be in famine.
The statement also called on the RSF, the Sudanese Armed Forces, and allied forces “to cease all military activities in and around the Zamzam camp and other camps where Sudanese civilians have sought refuge from the horrific violence that has swept their country, resulting in the worst humanitarian crisis the world is currently witnessing.”
The statement highlighted that more than 25 million Sudanese – nearly half of the population – are in urgent need of emergency assistance, and over 12 million civilians have been displaced from their homes since the conflict erupted.
The statement further called on the RSF, the Sudanese Armed Forces, and all armed groups to take concrete steps to ensure that humanitarian aid can reach all parts of Sudan safely and without obstruction, including enabling humanitarian corridors to allow for the secure movement of aid and civilians.
The statement reaffirmed that the only lasting solution to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan is the immediate cessation of hostilities. The United States remains firmly committed to supporting the Sudanese people in their pursuit of ending the conflict and transitioning to an inclusive, civilian-led democratic governance.
