The “Second Consultative Meeting of Initiatives and Efforts Aimed at Bringing Peace to Sudan” is scheduled to conclude its work tomorrow, Friday, at the Kempinski Hotel in the capital, Djibouti, and issue its final statement and recommendations.

According to the follow-ups of the Sudanhorizon news website, the meeting, which is an extension and completion of the first consultative meeting held on June 12 at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in Cairo, began its work yesterday on Wednesday, in the presence of international and local diplomatic figures. A number of heads of participating delegations addressed its opening session, as did the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Djibouti on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs who is on a mission outside his country.

The diplomats participating in the important meeting will review the progress made in the intensive efforts, mediations, and peace initiatives taken regarding the situation in Sudan since their last meeting in Cairo. They will discuss ways to enhance coordination mechanisms and harmonize the various efforts to overcome the main difficulties and challenges facing the efforts to resolve the Sudanese issue.

A senior diplomatic source participating in the Djibouti meetings told the Sudanhorizon news website that the participants are focusing on four main issues: addressing the humanitarian crisis, containing the sharp polarization in Sudanese society, supporting efforts to reach a ceasefire, and establishing a comprehensive political process with Sudanese ownership and leadership.

According to the diplomatic source, the organizers believe that “reaching a common understanding among the participants of the nature of the problem and evaluating the results of the facilitators’ current efforts is the correct approach to developing an agreed-upon strategy for the solution and unifying the vision for the future.”

Yesterday’s meetings were attended by high-level figures from the Djiboutian government and representatives of the League of Arab States, the United Nations, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the European Union, in addition to Bahrain, which currently chairs the League of Arab States, Mauritania, which currently chairs the African Union, Djibouti, which chairs the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United States.

The meetings are scheduled to conclude tomorrow and adopt a final statement that reaffirms the participants’ commitment to supporting a more coherent approach to enhancing coordination and integration in peace efforts in Sudan so that the different perspectives in this meeting are directed towards a common goal, which is lasting peace in Sudan.
