Sudan Discusses Membership Suspension in Upcoming AUPSC Visit
Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Musa
Ambassador Hussein Awad, the acting Sudanese Foreign Minister, explained that a delegation from the African Peace and Security Council is expected to visit Port Sudan early next October.
Awad said in a special statement to the Sudanhorizon news website that this visit by the council’s delegation comes while it is under the Egyptian presidency, and this is an indication of the right direction to put Sudan’s issues on the African Union’s agenda in a positive light and to amend the negative indicator that some countries were circulating, due to its deviation from seriousness, adding that Egypt is capable of putting these indicators in their correct framework and that Sudan will work honestly and faithfully with the delegation so that it can read the events and their course in Sudan correctly according to reality and put them in their natural order in the minutes of the Peace and Security Council and the African Union itself.
The Minister stated that the possibility of lifting the suspension on Sudan’s membership in the African Union is at the top of the topics to be discussed during the upcoming visit, adding that Sudan will present to the visiting Council delegation a comprehensive explanation of Sudan’s position on this immature decision taken by the African Union and that it will be the first topic that we will put forward on the agenda of the visit, pointing out that the African Peace and Security Council has a rotating presidency that rotates between the member states of the Council group for the specified period of the Council’s life, and that next month Egypt will chair the current session of the Council.
The Minister continued: “The African Union has a role in leading the peace process in Sudan, up and down, according to the curve of the countries participating in the African Peace and Security Council, pointing to the influence of some neighboring countries that favor political money over their external orientation, and that the influence of the African Union fluctuates between up and down, explaining that the African Union is stable when the state is wise in its management of this important platform and its understanding of regional issues and its position in the image that preserves the political balance of the continent and its leadership in the independence of its decision from the axes, and he said when there is a fragile state in the presidency of the union, things tend in favor of the axes that have their agenda, which they seek to pass on to the African countries, stressing that Egypt’s presidency with its political, economic and military weight of the African Peace and Security Council will contribute directly to amending matters in favor of the political decision of the continent, and the African orientation away from regional axes, and passing the African national agenda, expressing his optimism about Egypt’s presidency of this important platform, and adjusting the compass of its indicator in favor of African issues.
