Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Magdi Mofadal, addressed the meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency on Tuesday. The meeting is being held from June 8 to 12.

Ambassador Mofadal called on the IAEA and its member states to support Sudan’s efforts to restore cancer diagnosis and treatment services at government medical centers affected by the war. These include the National Oncology Center in Wad Madani, the Radiation and Isotope Hospital in Khartoum, and Shendi University, in addition to contributing to the establishment of three new oncology centers in underserved regions.

Mofadal also praised the progress achieved in the project to restore radiotherapy services at the National Oncology Center in Wad Madani, noting the successful completion of its first phase. He added that efforts are continuing to procure diagnostic and radiotherapy equipment, including a linear accelerator for the center.

The ambassador further called on member states and regional and international financing institutions to support the “Atoms4Food” initiative launched by the IAEA in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization.

He emphasized Sudan’s desire to receive a technical mission from the IAEA to assess the conditions of the country’s Atomic Energy Commission and related national institutions, identify their urgent needs, and develop a plan for rehabilitation and capacity-building in the fields of agriculture, livestock, fisheries, water resources, and food safety.

The appeal comes as Sudan seeks greater international support to rebuild scientific, medical, and technical infrastructure affected by the ongoing conflict while expanding the peaceful use of nuclear technology in development and public health sectors.
