Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon

The National Mine Action Center (NMAC) concluded a five-day training course on Wednesday in Port Sudan. The course aimed to educate trainers on the risks of mines, unexploded ordnance (UXOs), and war remnants. Held under the theme “Yes to a Sudan Free of Mines and War Remnants,” it was supervised by Major General Khalid Hamdan Adam, the Director General of NMAC.

Dr. Ibrahim Omar, Head of the Awareness Department at NMAC, stated that the course included 30 male and female participants who work as volunteers in shelters in the Red Sea State. The training provided information on identifying mines, war remnants, and areas at risk, including newly contaminated regions due to the expansion of conflict into previously unaffected areas. Participants were also trained in skills to deliver awareness messages about the dangers of mines and war remnants effectively.

Major General Khalid Hamdan Adam outlined the efforts made in Sudan to combat mines and war remnants, highlighting the significant risks posed by contaminated areas. He emphasized the critical role of awareness in mitigating risks, educating communities in affected areas, and guiding them on safe practices in contaminated regions.

This training marked the first course designed to train volunteers from shelters in the Red Sea State. It aims to support the voluntary return of displaced citizens to their regions in preparation for rebuilding and development efforts.

Participants demonstrated the skills they acquired during the course, mainly focusing on educating vulnerable groups, including children. Representatives from international organizations collaborating on and funding the course commended NMAC’s initiatives and proactive approach in this domain. The course concluded with the distribution of certificates to the shelter volunteers who participated in the training.
