The National Congress Party (NCP) and the Popular Congress Party (PCP) face significant challenges following the end of the war in Sudan, which began in mid-April last year. The two parties are working on shaping the country’s future beyond its current phase.
A joint organisational committee between the two parties discusses various political issues beyond Islamists’ internal organisational challenges, aiming to resolve the divisions within the movement.
Key challenges include the democratic civilian transition, commitment to values of freedom and justice, and establishing a state of institutions, which are central topics in the dialogue with other political forces and Islamists in Sudan.
Essam Mohamed Abdullah, a member of the NCP leadership office and deputy leader of the party in Khartoum State, told Sudanhorizon that a recent meeting took place between National Congress President Engineer Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid and the Secretary-General of the Popular Congress, Dr Amin Mahmoud. The meeting included several secretaries from both parties and was characterised by a strong sense of harmony and complete agreement. Both parties expressed commitment to improving political practices and elevating positive values for the nation’s progress.
He added: “The attendees agreed to support the armed forces in their national struggle and to confront efforts targeting Sudan’s religion, resources, people, heritage, values, and wealth.”
Abdullah pointed out that the primary threat is external, from forces of aggression. Both parties agreed that post-war Sudan must differ from pre-war Sudan, and they emphasised the need for broad national alignment that includes all components of the Sudanese people, regardless of their political or ideological affiliations, except those who refuse. This alignment must be based on national constants and principles.
He continued: “Both parties agreed on the importance of spreading freedom and justice, supporting a decentralised system of governance, and restoring the authority of the state and the rule of law. They called on the youth to lead and carry forward this grand national project in the next phase, with God’s will.”
In a joint statement obtained by Sudanhorizon, the NCP and PCP reaffirmed their support for the armed forces in their battle for national dignity. The parties praised the victories achieved by the armed forces, supporting forces, and the Popular Resistance and renewed their call for all sectors of the Sudanese people to continue supporting and rallying around the armed forces in this existential battle.
Both parties rejected external interference in Sudan’s internal affairs and emphasised the importance of countering foreign plots through a united internal front.
The statement, issued after the meeting, reiterated the unity of Sudan’s people and land, rejecting any calls for division. The two parties committed to working together for national unity and agreeing on a national project through Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue, aiming to reach a shared vision for post-war political action.
Additionally, informed sources told Sudanhorizon that young leaders from Islamist groups submitted a proposal to their senior leadership across various parties. The proposal highlighted the need to reflect on the past governance experience, address internal divisions within the Islamist movement, and develop a future vision for organisational and political action, considering Sudan’s challenges after the war.
