The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that its convoy of trucks has crossed the border from Chad through the Adre crossing heading to the Zamzam camp for internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in North Darfur.
The WFP pointed out that the trucks carry essential and vital medical and food supplies for about 12,500 persons, underlining the importance of aid reaching individuals and families in the camp quickly and safely.
The United Nations website (Monday) quoted the spokesman for the world Organization, Stephane Dujarric, as saying in his daily press conference, that the Adre crossing is a vital corridor for transporting humanitarian aid to Darfur, as more than 5,600 tons of food and medical supplies have been transported so far since August 20, which is enough for nearly half a million people.
Dujarric stressed the need to keep this crossing open and usable to ensure the enhancement of humanitarian aid and the continuous delivery of supplies to the targeted communities.
Meanwhile, WFP continues to distribute food to families in Zamzam camp through a network of local traders contracted by the programme. The programme has been able to support 100,000 people out of the 180,000 people it plans to reach in Zamzam.
International humanitarian organizations have repeatedly complained that the militia RSF rebels are obstructing humanitarian organizations efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to those affected by the war, and that aid trucks are being redirected to areas under their control.
