Ghana Seeks Alternative Venue for Sudan Match in Third Round
Cairo – Sudanhorizon
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has banned Ghana from playing at the historic Baba Yara Stadium in Accra for several reasons, including the stadium’s failure to meet FIFA’s standards and requirements.
The Ghana Football Association confirmed receiving an official notice from CAF today (Wednesday) regarding the closure of Baba Yara Stadium, as it does not meet FIFA’s requirements.
Ghana will now need to select an alternative venue to host the Sudanese national team on October 11 for the third round of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which will take place in Morocco next year.
The Ghanaian Football Association stated that CAF decided to close the stadium because it does not meet the required standards, making it unsuitable for hosting international matches of the third level.
The decision came after observations made by CAF during the recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Ghana and Angola on September 5. CAF requested that the Ghana Football Association choose an alternative venue outside Ghana for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers’ third- and fourth-round matches.
The second-round match of Group E between Ghana and Angola took place last week at Baba Yara Stadium in Accra and ended with a 1-0 victory for Angola. Ghanaian fans entered the pitch after the match, indicating security gaps in the stadium’s design.
