UN: At Least 8 Million Sudanese Children Out of School

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said that the future of Sudan’s children is among the most significant casualties of the war, as the conflict has deprived them of access to education.

Speaking at a meeting of UN Security Council members held under the so-called “Arria-formula” — informal meetings conducted outside the Council’s official framework — Mohammed said that at least 8 million school-age children remain out of school, with millions of displaced children disproportionately affected, particularly those seeking safety outside Sudan.

Since 2024, the United Nations has documented more than 67 attacks on schools across Sudan, while more than 154 cases of military use of schools have been reported.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General said the United Nations and its partners had managed to return more than one million Sudanese children to some form of learning, but stressed that this remains insufficient.

She emphasized that the time has come to end the war and pull Sudan back from the brink of losing another generation of its children.
