Omdurman – Sudanhorizon
The Governor of the Gezira Scheme, Ibrahim Mustafa, has confirmed that total losses incurred by the project as a result of systematic looting and destruction of assets by the Rapid Support Forces have reached $6 billion. He added that farmers have returned strongly to production in the aftermath of the war.
Speaking at the Ministry of Culture, Information, Tourism and Antiquities’ 53rd press briefing—organised by the Sudan News Agency on Tuesday in Omdurman—the Governor announced that 203,000 feddans had been cultivated during the current winter season. He also revealed plans to cultivate 1.6 million feddans across the summer and winter seasons, noting that the project has achieved substantial output despite the damage inflicted by the militia.
Mr Mustafa indicated that the cultivated area represents 85% of the targeted acreage, with average wheat yields reaching 15 sacks per feddan. He further highlighted the cultivation of 8,000 feddans using improved seeds, which have delivered high productivity. Overall, he stated that total cultivated land in the most recent season reached 1.745 million feddans—exceeding pre-war levels.
The Governor pointed to the administration’s shift towards improved governance, including the establishment of an information technology department aimed at optimising efficiency and maximising returns. He emphasised that the project has largely recovered from the effects of destruction, noting the introduction of satellite technologies in farming and irrigation, the rehabilitation of seed production areas, the acquisition of machinery, and the reactivation of pumping stations. He also referred to the administration’s role in supporting the war effort and the “liberation” of the project.
He added that several countries have expressed interest in investing in the scheme, but are awaiting sovereign guarantees.
For his part, the project’s Director of Irrigation, Mohamed Osman Al-Awad, announced a plan to rehabilitate the irrigation system following extensive damage. He noted that more than 1,500 breaches in canals have been repaired, alongside drainage works and water clearance for maintenance purposes.
