Foreign Theft of Sudan’s Largest Meteorite from the Geological Research Authority

Sudanhorizon – Hiba Abdel Azim
The Sudanhorizon news site has obtained confirmed information about the theft of the Manaseer Meteorite (Al-Sanaqeer)—the largest meteorite that had been on display at the Meteorite Exhibition of the Sudanese Geological Research Authority located on Nile Street in Khartoum. The meteorite weighed one ton and ten kilograms.
Multiple official sources told Sudanhorizon’s reporter that the meteorite was stolen during the period when Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militias controlled large parts of the Sudanese capital, including Nile Street. The sources also indicated that foreign countries are suspected of involvement in the theft, having possibly collaborated with the RSF. Supporting this suspicion is the fact that transporting the meteorite would have required special procedures and equipment—capabilities that the RSF lacks unless assisted by foreign states with the necessary logistical means. These countries (names withheld) had reportedly shown keen interest in the meteorite for years and had previously failed to acquire it, despite offering large sums of money. Their interest stems from the meteorite’s significant scientific value and the presence of rare minerals within it.
It is also noteworthy that Ukrainian mercenaries were reportedly stationed along Nile Street and working in support of the RSF during this time.
A technical expert told Sudanhorizon:
“Although the Manaseer Meteorite was the largest on display, only half of it was actually housed at the exhibition. The original meteorite that fell in the Bayouda Desert was twice the size of the piece displayed at the Geological Research Authority. Scientists at the authority regarded it as an irreplaceable geological heritage item that must not be compromised.”
