Lausanne, Switzerland – Sudanhorizon
Sudanese journalist Mohamed Osman Adam was selected as one of the penultimate finalists for the International Sports Press Association Award in the field of sports content writing (articles and columns).
More than two thousand journalists representing one hundred and thirty-three countries around the world participated in the award.
The Association published on its AIPS Awards 2024 website a list of twenty-seven (27) journalists whose contributions were shortlisted in the first stage from among more than two thousand competitors in three categories: writing, broadcasting, and photo-video, in addition to the youth category.
The first stage, which began at the end of last year, included more than two thousand journalists from 133 countries. Two Sudanese journalists made it to the longlist of 45 competitors for the Best Article Award. Ms. Nahid Al-Baqir (Awal Al-Nahar newspaper) won with her article “Discrimination Against Women: Difficulties in the Profession” (The Troubles) and Professor Mohamed Osman Adam, the African News Agency (PANA), a former journalist with the SUNA news agency, where he rose through the ranks to become Deputy and Assistant Director-General, Managing Editor, and Editor-in-Chief of Sudanow Magazine, and a representative for the American Associated Press for over twenty years.
He now also works as a journalist and translator for the Sudanhorizon news website. His article was titled: “In Sudan… Once Again, Sports Overcome Tragedies and Revive Hope in the Souls of the People.”
The articles were subjected to a second round of scrutiny, and the field of contenders in the articles category and the selection was narrowed down to 27 writers, including Professor Mohamed Osman Adam’s article.
The field will be narrowed down a third time by journalists from across the five continents to ten journalists in the final rounds. The top three winners will receive respectable cash prizes and certificates, while the remaining seven will receive certificates of appreciation from the International Federation at the global ceremony to be held in Morocco next May.
The Federation holds this competition annually, inviting journalists from around the world to write articles, videos, or still images related to sports, characterized by simplicity, depth, and a unique perspective. The predominant language is English, with the possibility of translating the content into English by specialists. Articles and content are subject to the work of committees comprising professional journalists from all continents with experience and training. They are then submitted to more specialized committees in the second stage. The final stage is subject to the decisions of the Federation’s Executive Committee. Winners are not announced until the day of the ceremony, and on the official platform.
The Federation will then publish international rankings, followed by continental rankings of the best content in the various categories mentioned.
The shortlist for this stage includes journalists from Algeria, Argentina, Canada, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Ghana, Hungary, Ireland, Morocco, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sudan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, arranged alphabetically in English. Some countries have reached the penultimate stage with more than three or four senior sports journalists.
The participation of Sudanese journalists came at the encouragement and initiative of Professor Mufti Mohammed Saeed, a well-known sports journalist and former editor of the Sudan News Agency, who represents the union in Sudan.
