Ethiopian authorities have begun practical steps to reopen their embassy in Khartoum. Sudanhorizon has recently learned that a diplomatic delegation from the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs arrived in Sudan to visit and inspect the Ethiopian diplomatic mission.

A diplomatic source who spoke to Sudanhorizon said that the purpose of the visit was to make the necessary arrangements to reopen the Ethiopian embassy, whose staff left Khartoum at the outbreak of the war in April 2023.

According to the information, the Ethiopian ambassador moved to the Ethiopian Consulate General in Gedaref shortly after the Rapid Support Forces rebellion, and then left for Addis Ababa.

The source considered the arrival of the Ethiopian delegation an important step towards strengthening bilateral relations, supporting the community, and coordinating with the relevant Sudanese authorities.

It’s worth noting that following the Rapid Support Forces rebellion, a number of diplomatic missions relocated to the capital, Addis Ababa, particularly Western embassies, and began operating from there. These include the French, British, American, Dutch, Canadian, Norwegian, and Italian embassies. Italy has a mission in Port Sudan, and is currently the only European country with a fully accredited ambassador temporarily residing in Addis Ababa.
