Darfur Associations in the UK Welcome Sanctions on RSF Leader

London – Sudanhorizon

The Darfur Associations in the United Kingdom have welcomed the decision by the U.S. Treasury Department and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to impose sanctions on the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemeti, as well as on arms suppliers and companies linked to him.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, viewed by The Investigator news outlet, the association stated:
“This decision represents an important step toward ending the war, achieving justice, and halting the crimes and violations that our people in Sudan, particularly in Darfur, have endured as a result of Hemeti’s policies and the actions of his forces. These include killings, displacements, rapes, and the starvation of innocent civilians, in addition to the systematic bombing of IDP camps in Darfur.”
The statement continued:
“We see these sanctions as a clear indication of the international community’s commitment to holding accountable those responsible for crimes against humanity and genocide that have plagued our people in Darfur for many years. We call on the United States and its allies to continue supporting the path of justice and peace and to ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes do not escape punishment.”
The association urged the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to expedite the implementation of Resolution 2736, which calls for the lifting of the siege on the city of El Fasher and the protection of civilians.
The statement expressed hope that these sanctions would mark the beginning of a long process of accountability and justice for the victims. It also looked forward to the upcoming briefing by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to the UN Security Council, scheduled for January 27, 2025. The association expressed optimism that this briefing would bring new developments and decisive resolutions in favour of the victims, contribute to ending ongoing violations and the war in Sudan, and serve as another step toward strengthening international justice and ensuring the accountability of perpetrators, ultimately supporting peace and stability in the country.
The Darfur Associations reaffirmed their commitment to being a steadfast voice defending the rights of the people of Darfur and all those affected across Sudan.
