Civil Defense: Fully Braced for Rainy Season’s Worst

Khartoum – Mariam Abshir

Sudan’s Civil Defense Forces have affirmed their full preparedness to respond to emergencies during this year’s rainy season across the country, stating that comprehensive contingency plans have been developed to address even the worst-case scenarios.

Speaking to Sudanhorizon, Major General Qurashi Hussein, Assistant Secretary-General of the General Administration of Emergencies at the Civil Defense Forces, said the Higher Committee for Rainy Season Emergencies, comprising all relevant government agencies, has established subsidiary emergency operations rooms in every state across Sudan.

He explained that these state-level emergency rooms have already begun holding regular meetings to assess the challenges encountered during last year’s rainy season and develop measures to prevent similar problems this year.

Major General Hussein noted that, despite the country’s current circumstances, the federal government, through the Ministry of Interior, has succeeded in providing all the equipment and resources required to respond to seasonal rains and flooding. These supplies have been distributed to Civil Defense branches throughout the states.

He also revealed that the central emergency operations room has begun conducting field visits, particularly to the country’s most vulnerable states, to assess preparedness measures on the ground.

According to the official, the Emergency Administration operates a major early warning and risk forecasting center in Red Sea State. The center is staffed by specialists and technicians from the police, irrigation authorities, and other relevant agencies, and operates around the clock to provide emergency operations rooms with forecasts and risk assessments.

Major General Hussein emphasized that Civil Defense maintains a high level of readiness for all possible scenarios, including the most severe conditions. He added that current forecasts indicate that this year’s rainy season is expected to be highly promising, while stressing that preparedness measures remain in place for any eventuality.
