Blinken to Chair Special UN Security Council Session on Sudan

The United Nations Security Council is set to hold a significant session on Sudan this Thursday to discuss the ongoing crisis caused by the war, including the resulting humanitarian situation.
According to high-ranking sources who spoke to Sudanhorizon, the session will be held at the ministerial level and chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, as the United States presides over the Council for December.
The sources added that Sudan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations is expected to participate and present interventions addressing the key issues under discussion.
Blinken’s leadership of the session aligns with efforts by the U.S. Democratic administration to make progress on the Sudan file before its officials leave their posts in approximately one month.
It is worth noting that the U.S. Congress recently approved a proposal to appoint a two-year-term Special Presidential Envoy for Sudan, succeeding the current envoy, Tom Perriello, who was appointed in February this year.
According to Congressional Resolution 7204, the elected President will appoint the new special envoy upon consultation and approval by the Senate. The envoy’s term is expected to begin no later than 90 days after the decision is issued.
