International Conference in Ethiopia Focuses on Developing Pastoral Communities

The Second International Conference on “Harnessing Applied Knowledge for Transformative Change in Pastoral and Semi-Pastoral Communities” concluded at Samara University in Ethiopia’s Afar region. Held over the past two days, the conference saw broad participation from researchers, academics, and policymakers from Ethiopia and other countries.
The Director of Samara University reaffirmed the university’s commitment to developing research that improves the conditions of pastoral communities, emphasizing the importance of applying practical knowledge to achieve tangible results. Meanwhile, Dr. Negash Linsho, Chair of the Resource, Employment, and Technology Affairs Committee in the Ethiopian House of Peoples’ Representatives, highlighted the role of scientific research and innovation in leveraging the natural resources abundant in the Afar region. He stated, “Scientific research contributes to transforming these resources into real developmental opportunities.”
24 research studies were presented during the conference, focusing on how to develop and support pastoral capacity-building to assist policymakers in formulating sustainable development policies.
Experts and academics from Europe, Asia, and Africa, along with representatives from various Ethiopian universities, participated in the conference. The goal was to strengthen research collaboration and exchange expertise to impact the targeted communities positively.
At the conclusion of its sessions, the conference recommended increasing investment in scientific research, developing educational policies tailored to the nature of pastoral communities, and expanding the use of modern technology to support sustainable development.
It is worth noting that the First National Conference on Pastoral Education in Ethiopia concluded its proceedings at Samara University in the Afar region on December 29, 2024, where the “Samara Declaration” was signed. This declaration aims to enhance education in pastoral communities. The conference outlined ten key points to improve education in these areas, including updating educational models, increasing educational opportunities for children and girls, utilizing modern technology, and fostering collaboration between the government and civil society.
