Tokyo – Sudanhorizon

Sudan’s Ambassador to Japan, Al-Raih Haidoub, met on Tuesday afternoon with Osamu Kawanishi, Head of the Asia Office of the African Development Bank based in Tokyo, to discuss the bank’s activities in Sudan.

During the meeting, Ambassador Haidoub expressed his deep appreciation for the bank’s leading role in promoting development across Africa and for the vital projects it has undertaken in Sudan. In this context, he also conveyed his gratitude to the bank and donor countries, particularly Japan, for their support to Sudan.

The ambassador provided a comprehensive overview of the situation in Sudan, highlighting what he described as improved stability and the large-scale return of citizens to their homes following the liberation of most areas of the country from what he referred to as a terrorist militia.

He also underscored the importance of implementing innovative projects during Sudan’s reconstruction phase, particularly in the fields of solar energy and small-scale income-generating initiatives aimed at reducing poverty among vulnerable families, such as fruit and vegetable drying projects.

In this regard, Haidoub stressed the need for a trilateral partnership involving Sudan, the African Development Bank, and the Japanese government.

The ambassador further invited the bank to develop a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Sudan, drawing on Japan’s widely recognized experience in post-war reconstruction and development.

For his part, Osamu Kawanishi thanked Ambassador Haidoub for the visit and for his remarks reflecting appreciation of the bank’s role in advancing development across Africa.

He reaffirmed the strong relationship between the African Development Bank and Sudan, noting that the bank has resumed its operations in the country and has agreed to finance a number of ambitious agricultural projects.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Head of Mission, Counselor Ali Mohamed Ahmed Othman, and Naoshige Kinoshita, Deputy Director of the bank’s office in Japan.

It is worth noting that the African Development Bank signed an agreement with the Government of Sudan last week to finance agricultural projects in Sennar and Blue Nile states at a total cost of $87 million.
