Abdel Mahmoud Abdel Halim to “Sudanhorizon”: Dialogue Committee Should Set Aside Affiliations and Avoid Media Spotlight

Diplomat and expert on regional and international affairs Ambassador Abdel Mahmoud Abdel Halim offered a number of recommendations to members of the Sudanese Dialogue Committee, urging them to move beyond their previous affiliations and political alignments and to place the national interest above personal and political considerations.

In a report publishe by Sudanhorizon, Abdel Mahmoud stressed the need for the committee to work calmly and patiently and not rush into media appearances or announce results prematurely. He warned that seeking “social prominence” could complicate the political landscape and affect the course of the dialogue.

He called on the committee to study the experiences of countries that successfully ended conflicts through dialogue, particularly South Africa, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Colombia, and to draw lessons from them in developing a Sudanese-led process capable of achieving lasting peace.

He stressed that the committee’s mission should not be limited to bringing the parties around one table, but should instead aim to build genuine consensus and lay the foundations for the post-war phase, away from political power-sharing arrangements that, he warned, could reproduce the causes of the crisis.

Abdel Mahmoud also urged the committee to address the international community with clear messages affirming Sudanese ownership of the dialogue and rejecting the imposition of political tracks from abroad. He said addressing the influence of external actors should itself be part of the Sudanese dialogue.
