Cairo – Sudanhorizon
Dr. Maya Morsi, Egyptian Minister of Social Solidarity and Vice President of the Egyptian Red Crescent, has launched a diverse humanitarian aid convoy from the Egyptian Red Crescent to support the Sudanese people and the Sudanese Red Crescent. The kick off took place at the Egyptian Red Crescent headquarters.
The convoy launch was attended by Dr. Amal Imam, Executive Director of the Egyptian Red Crescent, a delegation from the Sudanese Red Crescent, and Egyptian Red Crescent volunteers.
The humanitarian aid convoy from the Egyptian Red Crescent included approximately 70 tons of various supplies, including food baskets, medical supplies, and shelter materials such as mattresses, blankets, winter coverings, and other relief items. These items were selected based on priorities coordinated with the Sudanese Red Crescent.
The Minister of Social Solidarity stated that this convoy is a gift from the Egyptian people to the Sudanese people. It is the first overland convoy to travel approximately 2,000 kilometers to reach Sudanese territory, and is expected to arrive on New Year’s Eve, accompanied by a delegation of Egyptian Red Crescent volunteers.
The Minister indicated that there are directives from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to continuously support the Sudanese people’s response, emphasizing that the humanitarian response to the Sudanese crisis is the longest since the crisis began, lasting approximately 990 days to date.
She stated that launching the aid convoy to support the Sudanese people is an important message affirming the humanitarian and relief role of the Egyptian Red Crescent, and a continuation of its historical role in delivering humanitarian and relief aid to sister countries, as well as its 65,000 volunteers.
She noted that the convoy is a message of Egyptian support for the Sudanese people in their efforts to overcome the current critical phase. She added that this convoy is not the first and will not be the last in supporting the Egypt’s brothers in Sudan until they overcome the current crisis.
The minister pinpointed that since 2023, Egypt has sent three shipments of aid exceeding one thousand tons of humanitarian assistance from the Egyptian Red Crescent to the Sudanese Red Crescent via ships.
“Today, we continue our humanitarian and relief support for the Sudanese people, and this is a continuation of our commitment.” she stressed
The Minister of Social Solidarity affirmed that the Egyptian Red Crescent has played a vital role in supporting and providing relief to Sudanese people since the outbreak of the crisis in 2023. She stated that it has provided humanitarian aid and services to Sudanese citizens, including relief supplies, food aid, and hygiene kits. Furthermore, it has offered assistance in the form of transportation between governorates, family reunification services (including phone calls, internet access, and mobile phone top-ups), healthcare services, medical examinations, psychological support, and the equipping of clinics at border crossings.
