Minawi Holds Talks in Germany, Reiterates Government’s Conditions for a Ceasefire
Berlin – Sudanhorizon
Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minawi held talks on Monday, in the German capital, Berlin, with Serap Güler, State Secretary at the German Federal Foreign Office.
The Sudanese delegation included Sudan’s Ambassador to Germany, Ilham Ibrahim Mohamed Ahmed, Deputy Head of Mission Idris Mohamed Ali, and Attaché Imad Abdel Rahim. The German side comprised Ms. Gisa Brautigam, Director of the Sub-Saharan Africa and Sahel Department, Advisor Sebastian Fuchs, Sudan Desk Officer, and Advisor Maximilian Moll, Director of the State Secretary’s Office.
During the meeting, the Governor of Darfur explained that Sudan is facing a comprehensive aggression waged by the UAE, targeting its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. This aggression, he stated, is being carried out through the use of rebel militias as a tool, in addition to the recruitment of thousands of foreign mercenaries who are occupying Sudanese land and plundering its resources.
Minawi stressed that any talk of a humanitarian truce must aim to enable civilians to safely return to their towns and villages, resume their normal lives, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid. He emphasized that this will only be achieved by the withdrawal of militias from towns, villages, and civilian areas, their relocation to designated zones, the departure of mercenaries from Sudanese territory, and the release of hundreds of thousands of abductees.
The governor of Darfur indicated that any truce without fulfilling these conditions would effectively mean accepting the partition of Sudan, threatening its unity, security, and stability, and handing over its land and resources to militias and mercenaries who engage only in killing, genocide, and looting.
Minawi expressed Sudan’s appreciation for Germany’s humanitarian efforts and diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving peace and stability.
He called on Germany and the international community to exert serious pressure on the UAE to cease its role in fueling the war, killing civilians, destroying infrastructure and institutions, and expanding the circle of destruction.
He emphasized that Sudan would not accept any initiative or mechanism in which the UAE is a party, given that those who participate in fueling the war cannot be mediators or facilitators of peace.
For her part, the German State Minister expressed her country’s solidarity with the Sudanese people, particularly the civilians of El Fasher, in the face of the horrific crimes they have suffered. She affirmed that her visit to Sudan last October was part of Germany’s efforts to contribute to achieving peace and stability.
The Minister also referred to the recent sanctions imposed by the European Union against militia leaders, stressing her country’s understanding of Sudan’s view that halting the external military and political support received by the militia is a fundamental prerequisite for achieving a just and lasting peace in Sudan .
