Sources : EU Discusses Draft Resolution Condemning the Militia Amid UAE Moves to Abort It
Sudanhorizon– Exclusive – Mariam Abashar
Well sourced information obtained by Sudanhorizon on Tuesday revealed that the European Parliament has begun discussing a draft resolution on Tuesday condemning the Rapid Support Forces militia. According to the information, the anticipated resolution is in its final stages and will be voted on by the EU Foreign Ministers Council this Thursday.
According to leaks, the most important clause of the resolution is the explicit condemnation of the horrific crimes committed by the militia in El Fasher, considering them a continuation of militia previous crimes, and its classification as a terrorist organization based on the documented violations. The draft resolution also includes an explicit condemnation of the UAE, explicitly naming it as a supporter of the militia and calling on it to cease providing support and to bear responsibility for the militia’s crimes.
According to a high-ranking diplomatic source, the anticipated European draft resolution is the result of extensive efforts, work, and contacts within the Parliament with friends and European civil society groups that support the government and the Sudanese people, who oppose the Janjaweed’s violations and the UAE’s negative role in the Sudanese war.
This also includes direct meetings between the head of the mission and members of Parliament and some committee chairs in the European Parliament. The source noted that despite the unequal battle within Parliament and the Council, the firm conviction remains that Sudan is right. The continued efforts and the exposure of the facts by officials at the presidential, ministerial, and diplomatic mission levels culminated in the resolution issued by the EU foreign ministers condemning the militia’s second-in-command.
The diplomat pointed out that the government has hoped for more, but the resolution, in its calculations, is an important step in the right direction, and that the European Union is finally beginning to awaken from the influence of negative civil society groups, their collaborators, and the powerful UAE lobby. The source considered the condemnation of Dagalo a significant testament to the state’s efforts on the ground and its diplomatic efforts in capitals and within the European Union.
The source anticipated that the draft resolution would generate considerable debate within the European Parliament, which comprises 700 members and a large number of political parties.
According to the sources, three proposals emerged during the discussions, all emphasizing the importance of explicitly naming the United Arab Emirates in the resolution and calling upon it to cease its support for the Rapid Support Forces.
Furthermore, all the submitted proposals condemn the militia for the crimes it has committed and urge the European Commission to begin considering the possibility of designating the Rapid Support Forces as an international terrorist organization. The source considered this level of preliminary discussion on the draft resolution a very advanced step, but noted that the vote on the resolution will be decisive on Thursday.
Information revealed intensive efforts by the UAE to cancel the resolution or render it ineffective.
The source added that Abu Dhabi dispatched the EU Special Envoy, Lana Zaki, yesterday, who met with the President of the European Parliament as part of its efforts to cancel the resolution or weaken its impact. The sources pointed out that the UAE and some EU powers supporting the militia are exploiting the militia’s acceptance of the truce and the government’s rejection of it.
The sources described this claim as false, stating that the militia aims to use the truce to solidify its control, perpetuate its crimes, and maintain impunity. They emphasized that any talk of a ceasefire must be based on the Jeddah declaration and the roadmap submitted by the government.
