Egypt to Host Sudanese Political Talks, Mid-November

Cairo – Sudanhorizon

A new round of consultations among Sudanese political forces will be held in Cairo, mid-November, few days after a similar round was concluded in Switzerland under the auspices of the French organization “Promédation.”

At the end of last month, the Swiss city of Nyon hosted political consultations that included several Sudanese forces. Following these consultations, participants announced an agreement on the need to end the war and engage in a comprehensive political process that would pave the way for ending the conflict and establishing the foundations for a democratic civilian government.

Participating in that round were representatives of the Civil Democratic Alliance of Revolutionary Forces (Sumud), organizations from the Democratic Bloc Alliance supporting the army, as well as representatives of the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Arko Minawi, Mubarak Ardol, head of the Democratic Alliance for Social Justice, and Nabil Adib, representing the civilian forces within it. Other blocs also attended, including the National Movement Alliance headed by Tijani Sisi and the National Consensus Alliance.

Political forces affiliated with the Democratic Bloc announced a boycott of the Nyon workshop due to the participation of representatives from the “Sumud” alliance, considered supportive of the Rapid Support Forces.

The Secretary-General of the National Umma Party, Al-Wathiq Al-Brair , was quoted by Sudan Tribune on Monday as saying that the upcoming meeting, scheduled for November 15, is part of efforts to strengthen Sudanese dialogue, end the war, and continue previous discussions to reach an agreement on how to launch the political process and Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue.

He explained that the Nyon meeting was one of the informal efforts undertaken by the Swiss Foreign Ministry in cooperation with the “Promediation” organization to support the comprehensive political process, leading to sustainable peace and a civilian democratic transition.

He also noted that the meeting came within the context of regional and international efforts to find a way out of the Sudanese national crisis through a comprehensive dialogue led entirely by Sudanese people. He added that the meeting discussed a number of issues, most notably the unity of Sudan, both its land and its people, and the cessation of war and violations against civilians.

He emphasized the importance of opening humanitarian corridors through a temporary truce to allow aid reach affected areas, and launching a national political process that addresses the root causes of the crisis and establishes a civilian transition period leading to a sustainable democratic transformation.

Al-Brair stressed that the success of any political initiative depends on its inclusiveness and fair representation of the various civil and political components, as well as the need for coordination between regional and international tracks, including the African Union, the European Union, the United Nations, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), to ensure a unified framework and integrated efforts.
