Sudan’s Mission in Geneva Calls for Urgent Assistance to Control Dengue Fever

Geneva – Sudanhorizon
The Sudan Permanent Representative to the Human Rights Council, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, has reviewed the overall humanitarian and health conditions in the country, focusing on the situations in El Fasher, Dilling, and Kadugli.
In his statement he delivered during the joint high-level briefing organized by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva today, in the presence and participation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the Permanent Representative to Geneva, criticized the international community’s silence regarding the militia’s atrocities and crimes.
He pinpointed that these crimes includes the use of siege and starvation as weapons to kill or displace civilians, in blatant defiance of the calls of the international community, including the Security Council and its Resolution 2736, which the rebel militia has ignored.
The ambassador revealed the rates of voluntary return of displaced persons and refugees, referring in this context to the recent report issued by the International Organization for Migration, which documented the return of more than (2) million people over the past month to areas that had stabilized after the government regained control.
This, he underlined, shows people’s confidence in their government and its institutions, especially the Sudanese Armed Forces. He noted that none of these civilians had gone to an area where the militia was present.
The delegate pointed to the current government’s efforts to provide the immediate needs of the returnees, including basic services, calling on humanitarian organizations to implement urgent projects to support these efforts.
He noted the priority given by the civilian cabinet providing basic services, “rehabilitating facilities destroyed by the terrorist militia, and preparing the country to receive the returnees.”
The Permanent Representative focused in his statement on the health situation in the country, noting in this context the systematic targeting and destruction of the health system, and calling on relevant organizations to support the significant efforts undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Health to combat the spread of dengue fever in some states.
Sudan’s mission in Geneva has shortly prior to the meeting submitted lists of urgent needs to combat dengue fever and rainy seasons emergencies to the heads of relevant organizations.
At the end of his statement, the Permanent Representative reiterated the government’s commitment to expedite all procedures for international humanitarian organizations and facilitate their work.
