To Control the Economy, the Emergency Committee Takes Significant Decisions

The Economic Emergency Committee, headed by Prime Minister Kamil Idris, issued important decisions on Wednesday to control the economy. The decisions came after an extensive discussion on a number of economic issues and how to address the deterioration caused by the decline of the national currency against foreign currencies. The meeting also reviewed urgent proposals and solutions to curb smuggling and enhance foreign exchange resources.
The decisions stipulated the formation of an Economic Emergency Committee headed by the Prime Minister, prohibiting the import of goods unless all banking and commercial controls and procedures are met, and prohibiting the entry of any goods that do not meet approved conditions and specifications.
The decisions restricted the purchase and marketing of gold to a single government entity, with this entity committed to providing the necessary foreign exchange to beneficiaries. The decisions also included activating the role of anti-smuggling forces and the need to enforce anti-smuggling laws and legislation, making possession or storage of gold without official documents a crime. The decisions also included unifying the exchange rate and combating smuggling.
She called for a review of the Cabinet’s decision regulating car imports and controlling unregulated imports through ports and border crossings. She also called for a review of emergency orders issued by states regarding the imposition of illegal taxes in violation of the Federal Governance Law, to ease the burden on citizens.
