IOM: 4.6 Million Sudanese Return to Home Areas

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Thursday said the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees who have returned to their areas of origin in Sudan has risen to 4,649,056, while the number of IDPs continues to decline.

In a statement on displacement and returns in Sudan, the UN agency said its data was based on surveys conducted in approximately 13,000 locations across 185 localities in all 18 states of Sudan.

It explained that the number of IDPs is estimated at 8,685,273, distributed across 185 localities, representing a 25% decrease compared to the highest recorded level of displacement and a 1% decrease compared to the previous month.

The statement added that the number of returnees to their areas of origin reached 4,649,056, distributed across 74 localities. Eighty-two percent of these returnees came from areas of internal displacement, while 18% returned from outside Sudan.

It noted that children under 18 years of age constitute nearly half of both internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees, representing 55 percent of the total IDP population and 50 percent of the total returnees.

The organization also reported a 5 percent increase in the number of returnees compared to the previous month.

On June 15, the organization announced a decrease in the number of IDPs to 8,805,506.

Meanwhile, the number of returnees to their areas of origin at that time was 4,441,384, representing a 24 percent decrease compared to the peak recorded in January 2025, when the number reached 11,585,384.

This decline is attributed to the increased return movement following the army’s recapture of Khartoum, Sinnar, and Gezira states .
