Zain Continues Its Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The Sudanese mobile telecommunications company, “Zain,” has continued its annual October campaign—aimed at raising awareness about the risks of breast cancer—through major community and health-focused events. These activities took place at Al-Ribat University Hospital in Khartoum, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Medical Services, and at Haj Al-Safi Hospital in Khartoum North. This initiative is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to reach a broader segment of women and expand the scope of awareness and early detection.
At Al-Ribat University Hospital, the event was attended by a large number of Sudanese Police personnel, alongside a group of physicians and specialists. Notable attendees included Police Major General (Dr.) Yousef Mukhtar, Director of the Technical Department at the General Directorate of Medical Services and Director of the Police Children’s Hospital; Police Major General Mufida Mohammed Suleiman, Director of the Family and Child Protection Unit; retired Police Major General Tawhida Salih; and Dr. Aida Hussein. The presence of the university community underscored the synergy between institutions in supporting women’s health.

The event featured an in-depth awareness lecture by Dr. Aida Hussein on the importance of early detection as the first line of defense against the disease. During the session, Dr. Hussein announced that she would provide free follow-up consultations for patients, in support of the campaign’s objectives and to encourage women to seek regular medical check-ups. Similar events took place at the Haja Asia Al-Rahio Oncology Center within Haj Al-Safi Hospital in Khartoum North. Dr. Hajar Mohammed Al-Atta, an oncologist and the director of Haj Al-Safi Hospital, addressed the gathering, commending Zain’s annual initiative aimed at fostering community awareness to combat cancer. Additionally, oncologist Dr. Heba Farouq delivered an informative awareness lecture that drew significant engagement from the audience.
During these events, portable screening devices—introduced by Zain for the first time as part of this year’s initiatives—were unveiled. These compact devices utilize high-intensity LED light, which is directed onto the skin to illuminate internal breast tissue. This enables women to perform non-diagnostic self-examinations and detect potential symptoms early, without the immediate need for a medical consultation—a particularly valuable solution for those in remote or densely populated areas.
These activities are an extension of a partnership Zain has maintained since 2007 with civil society organizations and official government bodies. This year, the campaign reached Khartoum State, Al-Jazirah State, and camps for displaced persons in the Northern State. Furthermore, an interactive forum is scheduled for October 24th, featuring a panel of medical experts and the stories of cancer survivors whose recovery was made possible through awareness and early detection. This reinforces the campaign’s theme for this year, “Get Screened Today for Peace of Mind Tomorrow,” which seeks to promote the health of Sudanese women and spread health awareness to ensure a sound and thriving society.
