The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Thursday that more than 1.1 million people have returned to Sudan from neighboring countries between January 2024 and August 2026.
In a statement, the UN-affiliated organization said the number of returnees reached 1,110,605 people, who entered Sudan through seven border crossing points. These included the Ashkeit and Argeen crossings in the Northern State on the border with Egypt, the Gallabat-Metema crossing on the Ethiopian border, and the Laffa crossing in Kassala State on the border with Eritrea.
The organization added that the crossing points also included the Adikong-El Geneina crossing in West Darfur, Um Dukhun in Central Darfur, and Tina in North Darfur, all along the border with Chad.
The organization reported that around 80% of the returnees arrived from Egypt, while the remainder came from Chad, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. It noted that 54% of the returnees returned to Sudan following improved security conditions in their areas of origin.
According to the United Nations, an estimated 4.2 million Sudanese have crossed into neighboring countries, including 1,541,827 people who fled to Egypt, while the remainder went to Chad, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Libya, and the Central African Republic.
