Sudan: Inflation Rate Rises in August Compared to the Same Month Last Year

Sudan’s Central Bureau of Statistics announced on Wednesday a 26.14% increase in the annual rate of change (inflation) for August 2026, compared to the same month in 2025.
A statement issued by the Bureau indicated that the general consumer price index reached 742,830.07 points in August 2026, up from 718,930.72 points in July 2026—marking a monthly increase of 3.32%. The Bureau attributed this rise to a significant surge in the prices of the food and beverage category.
The inflation rate in urban areas stood at 38.05% in August 2026 compared to August 2025, while in rural areas, it reached 19.26% during the same period.
Sudan currently records the highest inflation rates globally, driven by compounded issues linked to the depreciation of the Sudanese pound; the exchange rate has shifted from an average of 565 pounds prior to the outbreak of the war to 7,300 pounds.
The country is experiencing an acute shortage of foreign currency, which drives up import costs and passes exchange rate differentials on to the end consumer, in addition to rising global prices—particularly for fuel and food.
