Osman Mirghani to “Sudanhorizon”: It Is Wiser to Focus on the Goals of Dialogue, Not Its Means

Osman Mirghani, spokesperson for the Sudan Dialogue Preparatory Committee, affirmed that Sudanese dialogue represents a means of resolving the crisis that has brought the country to a stage threatening its unity and territorial integrity, stressing that the alternative to dialogue is continued armed conflict.
In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon on Saturday, Mirghani said it was illogical to describe dialogue as paving the way for partition. He asked: “How can dialogue be described as paving the way for division? And does maintaining the current situation preserve the unity of the state and prevent division?” He added: “It is wise to look at the call for dialogue in terms of its goals rather than its means, as long as the ultimate goal is the interest of the country.”
He noted that approaches may differ regarding the details and procedures of the dialogue, stressing that this would not change anything except insofar as it either accelerates or delays the achievement of the desired objectives.
Regarding comments by Darfur Regional Governor and Sudan Liberation Movement leader Minni Minnawi that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) could call for another dialogue in areas under their control, Mirghani questioned the rationale for suspending dialogue in Khartoum out of fear that a parallel dialogue might be launched.
“Would suspending the call for dialogue in Khartoum prevent the Rapid Support Forces from holding dialogue in areas under their control? Should we suspend dialogue in Khartoum to avoid the RSF calling for dialogue in areas under its control?” he asked.
Regarding the role and mandate of the National Dialogue Committee, the spokesperson for the Sudan Dialogue Preparatory Committee explained that his committee’s mandate is limited to preparing for Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue. He stressed that the committee has no role in determining the participants, timing, agenda, or management of the dialogue.
