AU Extraordinary Summit Opens Today in Luanda, Sudan Expected to Top Discussions

The 21st Extraordinary Summit of the African Union, focused on strengthening mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution in Africa, began today (Sunday) at the Conference Center in the Angolan capital, Luanda.

The summit is being attended by several African heads of state and government, led by the African Union Commission, along with relevant AU mechanisms and regional economic communities, the Peace and Security Council, and international partners.

Today’s Luanda Summit is focusing on assessing mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, strengthening Africa’s peace and security architecture and governance architecture, in addition to other issues including early warning and response, combating terrorism and violent extremism, strengthening the role of the Peace and Security Council, and financing African peace operations.

The Extraordinary Executive Council of African foreign ministers held its meeting yesterday (Saturday), ahead of the leaders’ summit. Sources told Sudanhorizon that the Sudan file will be on the summit’s agenda.

The sources, speaking to Sudanhorizon, expected Sudan to call during the summit for an end to external interference in its internal affairs, reaffirm Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and reject the establishment of any parallel entities or governments.

According to African Union reports, more than 12 heads of state and government, in addition to heads of delegations, are expected to participate in today’s summit.
