Ambassador Muawiya Osman Khalid, Undersecretary of the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, led the Sudan delegation participating in the 22nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD). The session commenced on Saturday morning in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, with the participation of foreign ministers, heads of delegations, and representatives from member states, alongside officials from the Community’s General Secretariat.
In his address at the opening of the session, the Undersecretary welcomed the reactivation and revitalization of the Community following a period of suspension—a hiatus brought about by well-known circumstances. He highlighted the current challenges facing both the organization and its member states, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and efforts to enhance the efficiency of the Community’s institutions, given its status as a prominent regional organization on the African continent.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Khalid reviewed the current situation in Sudan, pointing to the existential threat posed by the war of rebellion waged by a terrorist militia. He noted the resulting destruction and targeting of vital infrastructure and cultural heritage, facilitated by the support and backing of certain regional powers.
Furthermore, he drew attention to the ethnic cleansing campaigns and systematic starvation inflicted upon the country by the militia and mercenaries brought in from various nations. He called upon the member states of the Community to condemn these atrocities, designate the “Rapid Support Militia” as a terrorist organization, and coordinate efforts to block the flow of arms, logistical support, and the transit of mercenaries across their respective territories. The Executive Council concluded its session by adopting a set of resolutions and recommendations aimed at supporting the progress of the grouping and enhancing its effectiveness in achieving its objectives and the aspirations of the peoples of its member states.
