Abdullah Abu Garda to Sudanhorizon: ‘Militia’s El Fasher, El Geneina Massacres Rank Among Worst Modern Genocides – No Peace Without Justice’
Sudanhorizon – Maryam Abashar
Abdullah Abu Garda, President of the Darfur Associations Gathering in the United Kingdom, has affirmed that the crimes allegedly committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in the cities of El Geneina and El Fasher—including the systematic killing of unarmed civilians, the targeting of women, children and the elderly, forced displacement, starvation and siege—represent one of the most horrific humanitarian tragedies witnessed by the world in the modern era.
In an exclusive statement to the Sudanhorizon news website, Abu Garda said that the militia had killed tens of thousands of innocent civilians, with the number of victims estimated at around 75,000 civilians in El Fasher and 22,000 in El Geneina, in events marked by widespread and systematic atrocities that have shaken the conscience of humanity.
The President of the Darfur Associations Gathering in the United Kingdom drew attention to the fact that the Human Rights Council’s Fact-Finding Mission had concluded, following its investigations, that the crimes allegedly committed by the militia in El Fasher bore the hallmarks of genocide. This, he said, makes these crimes an issue that concerns not only the Sudanese people but also the international system and the conscience of the international community.
He said that the blood of the victims would remain a sacred trust upon their shoulders and that they would not allow the truth to be buried alongside the victims, nor permit crimes of genocide to become a forgotten chapter in the history of the war.
The association’s president stressed that Sudan could have no sustainable peace without justice, no genuine reconciliation without accountability, and no chance of building Sudan’s future on impunity. He added that no immunity or pardon should be granted to anyone whose responsibility for crimes against civilians is established.
