Khartoum Government Lifts Ban and Reopens Export Western Route

The Khartoum State government decided on Thursday to lift the ban on the movement of goods and merchandise via the “Exports” route, reopening it to commercial trucks traveling to and from North Kordofan State.

In a statement, the government said, “The State Security Committee has decided to cancel the governor’s previous decision and Emergency Order No. 2, which banned the movement of goods and merchandise through the Exports Route to and from El Obeid and Bara.”

It clarified that the route will be open to the movement of goods and merchandise, and the restrictions on importing goods from states neighboring Khartoum will be lifted.

The decision is expected to facilitate the flow of goods and essential commodities to citizens living along the border between Khartoum and North Kordofan after years of hardship.

Previously, people relied on smuggled goods, which drove prices to record highs. In December 2025, the governor of Khartoum decided to ban the transport of goods across the state’s western border to tighten the noose around the Rapid Support Forces militia, which then controlled key locations along the export route.

On July 25th, the army and its allies seized control of the areas of Umm Qurfa, Jabra al-Sheikh, and Jurayjekh, as well as the entire export route from Omdurman to Bara, reaching as far as El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state.
