Darfur IDP Coordination: Humanitarian Crisis Facing Refugees Is Beyond Description

The General Coordination of Darfur IDP’s and Refugee Camps has renewed its warnings over the alarming and deteriorating humanitarian and health conditions facing displaced people and refugees.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the coordination’s spokesperson, Adam Rahal Mursal, said millions of displaced people are living in dire humanitarian conditions, lacking the most basic essential services and residing in deteriorating camps amid fears of disease outbreaks and severe shortages of food and medicine.

The statement reported cases of a cholera outbreak in displacement camps, with 12 cases recorded in the Tawila area, while the number of cases varied across other camps. It warned of fears that the disease could spread widely due to the rainy season and contamination of water sources.

The statement also warned that the camps are suffering from a lack of clean drinking water, with most residents relying on contaminated water, facilitating the spread of disease. The absence of adequate sanitation systems further compounds the crisis, while malnutrition is worsening the suffering of children and increasing the risk of epidemics.

The General Coordination appealed to humanitarian organizations to urgently provide food and medicine. It also called on international health agencies to send vaccines and medical supplies.

Rahal called on the international community to pressure the parties to the conflict to allow humanitarian assistance to reach those in need without obstruction or politicization. He also urged international organizations to recognize that an urgent response to the tragedy facing Darfur’s displaced people is not an option, but a humanitarian and moral obligation that cannot be postponed.

“What is happening in the camps is beyond description,” he said.
