Public Opinion Poll on the Sovereign Council’s Performance Shows Close Convergence in Assessments

A public opinion poll conducted among Sudanese citizens regarding the future of the Sovereign Council, Sudan’s collective presidency, has garnered significant attention, with 135,816 participants. 64% of respondents linked the likelihood of any decisions to dissolve the Council to the existence of a broad national political consensus, while 28% stated that they do not see a need for political consensus in dissolving the Council.
The results of the poll, conducted by the Arab Experts Center for Press Services and Public Opinion Studies, showed that 38% of participants believe the Sovereignty Council’s performance is weak in terms of overall assessment and has limited impact, while 32% said its performance is acceptable with some reservations and that the Council can maintain the stability of the state.
The poll, the results of which were obtained by Sudanhorizon, was widely circulated online, allowing Sudanese citizens to participate both within Sudan across its various states and abroad in all countries of the diaspora.
To gauge participants’ satisfaction with the Sovereign Council’s management of the transitional period, they were asked: “In your opinion, has the Sovereign Council succeeded in managing the transitional period so far?” The results showed that 48.1% of participants believed the Sovereign Council has been somewhat successful in managing the transitional phase, compared to 26.1% who affirmed its success, while 25.8% believed it had not succeeded.
When surveying participants’ opinions on the Sovereign Council’s ability to lead the next phase, they were asked: “In your estimation, is the Sovereign Council still capable of leading the next phase?” The results showed that 50.6% of participants believed the Council was no longer capable of leading the next phase, compared to 40.7% who believed it was still capable, while 8.7% said they did not know.
As part of measuring participants’ views on the Sovereign Council’s role in preserving Sudan’s sovereignty, they were asked: “Do you believe that the existence of the Sovereign Council in its current form is linked to preserving Sudan’s sovereignty?” The results showed that 47.9% of participants believed that the existence of the Sovereign Council is linked to preserving Sudan’s sovereignty, compared to 46.4% who disagreed, while 5.7% said they did not know.
To assess participants’ views on the role of the Sovereign Council in preserving Sudan’s unity, they were asked: “In your opinion, does the Sovereign Council, in its current form, guarantee Sudan’s unity?” The results showed that 39.9% of participants believe the Sovereign Council somewhat guarantees Sudan’s unity, while 32.3% believe it does, and 27.8% believe it does not.
Regarding the Sovereign Council’s role in ending the war, participants were asked: “Do you believe that the continuation of the current Sovereign Council contributes to accelerating the end of the war?” The results showed that 49% of participants believe the continuation of the Sovereign Council does not contribute to accelerating the end of the war, while 42.9% believe it does, and 8% said they did not know.
To gauge participants’ attitudes toward the future of the Sovereign Council, they were asked: “Do you support dissolving the Sovereign Council?” The results showed that 46.5% of participants supported dissolving the Sovereign Council, while 43.1% opposed it, and 10.4% said they had no opinion.
To determine participants’ stance on restructuring the Sovereign Council, they were asked: “Do you support restructuring the Sovereign Council instead of dissolving it?” The results showed that 47.7% of participants did not support restructuring the Sovereign Council, while 46.5% supported this option, and 5.8% said they had no opinion.
