Kurmuk Governor to Sudanhorizon: Residents Begin Returning as RSF Camps Remain Inside Ethiopia

The Governor of Kurmuk, Abdel Aati Mohamed Al-Faki, has announced that the locality is beginning to witness the gradual return of residents, noting that returns have already started in two administrative units north of Kurmuk as part of ongoing efforts to restore stability and normalize civilian life.

In an exclusive interview with Sudanhorizon, Al-Faki said the authorities are currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the damage inflicted on Kurmuk following what he described as the occupation of the town by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He stated that essential public service facilities were severely affected.

He added that the relevant authorities are working to remove unexploded ordnance, hazardous objects, and other remnants of war scattered throughout the town in order to safeguard civilians and prepare the area for the safe return of residents. He emphasized that large quantities of war remnants remain in the area, posing a direct threat to the population.

The governor said there is a strong desire among displaced residents to return to their homes, but stressed that their return to the town itself will depend on the completion of the work being carried out by specialized technical committees to ensure public safety.

He reiterated that the scale of destruction in Kurmuk is extensive, identifying the health sector and water infrastructure as the two areas most heavily affected. He added that authorities are gradually restoring basic services and working to re-establish normal civilian life.

Concluding his remarks, the Governor of Kurmuk claimed that camps belonging to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) remain located inside Ethiopian territory.
