Energy Minister: Preparations Underway to Resume Wind Power Project in Dongola

Sudan’s Minister of Energy, Counselor Al-Mutasim Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced that the ministry has begun the necessary preparations to resume implementation of the Dongola Wind Power Project, describing it as an important step toward increasing electricity generation from clean energy sources.

The remarks came during his meeting on Sunday with the Governor of the Northern State, Lieutenant General Abdel Rahman Abdel Hamid Ibrahim, as part of an official visit to assess the state’s electricity supply and review ongoing energy projects, according to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA).

During the visit, the Minister of Energy and the Governor inspected progress on the Dongola Solar Power Plant, which will have a generation capacity of 20 megawatts, and also visited the Dongola Wind Power Project to review its implementation status and the challenges delaying its completion.

The two officials discussed plans to expand renewable energy projects across the Northern State and explored ways to strengthen the electricity sector to ensure a more stable power supply and support the state’s development needs.

The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to expanding renewable energy projects in the Northern State, noting that the area north of Dongola is among the country’s most suitable locations for such projects because of its favorable natural conditions.

He added that the Dongola Solar Power Plant will generate 20 megawatts of electricity and announced that he had instructed the appointment of a resident engineer to oversee implementation and monitor progress to ensure the project is completed according to schedule.

For his part, the Governor of the Northern State described the minister’s visit as highly significant, expressing confidence that it would have positive outcomes for electricity and energy projects across the state.

The governor also revealed that the Minister of Energy had instructed officials to accelerate work on the Dongola Solar Power Plant to ensure its timely completion. He further disclosed that the minister had initiated contacts aimed at restarting the Dongola Wind Power Project, which is expected to generate 1 megawatt in its first phase before expanding to 100 megawatts in the second phase.
