Ministry of Energy Statement on New Power Barge

The Sudanese Ministry of Energy announced on Wednesday the arrival of a power barge belonging to the (Nawawai Company-Transliteration from Arabic) at Port Sudan. This barge will bolster the electricity supply and secure the needs of the country in general, and Red Sea State in particular. In a press statement reviewed by Sudanhorizon, the Ministry confirmed that the barge will enter service as soon as the connection procedures and technical preparations are completed.

According to the statement, the acquisition of the barge service is part of the state’s efforts to secure the country’s electricity needs, especially in Red Sea State, at the lowest possible cost. This follows an open international tender in which five global companies participated, ultimately resulting in “Nawawai” Company winning the bid after technical and financial evaluation based on transparency and competitive standards.

The statement indicated that the new contract includes the provision of a 100-megawatt power barge, in addition to a 50-megawatt ground-based power plant, at a price of 4.95 Sudanese pounds per kilowatt-hour. This represents a significant decrease in the cost of purchasing power compared to the previous contract, allowing the state to save financial resources that can be directed towards developing the national grid and improving electricity services. The Ministry confirmed that the Kalaniib power station project (Kilometer 10), which began in 2018, faced setbacks due to the exceptional circumstances the country has experienced, starting with the December Revolution, through the COVID-19 pandemic, and culminating in the war. It noted that intensive efforts have recently been made to secure project financing through the African Export-Import Bank, paving the way for resuming and completing the project in the near future. The Ministry added that the commissioning of the new power barge, following the completion of technical tests, will enhance the national grid’s production capacity and contribute to improving the stability of the electricity supply and gradually reducing power outages, in accordance with operational capabilities.
