Nile River State: Strict Standards and Specifications for Gold Testing and Analysis Laboratories
Atbara -Sudanhorizon
The Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO) has conducted comprehensive inspection and technical reviews of gold testing and analysis laboratories (known locally as inspection of “Shishna” Gold) in the Dar Mali market in Berber locality. This was part of a rigorous program for the X-ray precious metals analysis licensing exam, and falls within SSMO’s plans to extend its technical control and ensure that markets comply with the required standards and regulations.
Mohammed Awad, a representative of the Measurement and Calibration Department, explained that these field reviews represent a crucial step and a definitive confirmation of the market’s commitment to the required technical standards and strict regulations established by the SSMO to protect the national economy.
He indicated that the comprehensive audits were designed to address all shortcomings. This included environmental inspections, general and specific requirements for equipment and auxiliary units, calibration of laser devices to verify reading accuracy, and evaluation of technicians’ competence. This decisive action resulted in the withholding of professional practice certificates from laboratories that did not up to par with the set standards, along with a complete ban on their operations until all identified violations were rectified. This reinforces the principle of reliability and mandatory accuracy that the Authority enforces in the market.
This oversight presence has been widely praised by stakeholders and investors in the sector.
The Director of the Nile River State Assay Office, Hamad Sayed Ahmed, confirmed that this initiative stems from the office’s vision to secure economic activity through assaying laboratories and to regulate the work of assayers through two main pillars: the technical qualification of laboratory management and ensuring the competence of personnel. He explained that these strict requirements apply to a wide network of laboratories spread throughout the state, estimated at around 90, noting that more than 180 students have undergone specialized examinations to obtain licenses to practice the profession of precious metals analysis.
Sayed Ahmed added that there is administrative coordination linking the Authority with the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company and the General Authority for Geological Research to create an integrated system for managing economic activity in a way that serves the sustainable development of the state, especially since the “Dar Mali” market is considered one of the largest gold complexes in the region, extending over an area of up to 16 square kilometers since its establishment in 2015, and housing about 460 milling and extraction complexes, in addition to its intense commercial and service activity, which is now under the safe umbrella of standards and metrology control.
