Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr. Anwar Ibrahim, has mourned the passing of his academic friend, Professor John L. Esposito. In his Facebook page, Dr Anwar has described professor Esposito as one of the world’s leading scholars of Islam.
Anwar said he met John in the early 1970s, and their friendship lasted for more than five decades.
He added that professor Esposito laid the intellectual foundations for a deeper understanding of Islam in the West. His contributions to Muslim-Christian understanding were immense.
He founded the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, edited the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Muslim World, served as president of the Middle East Studies Association of North America, and co-authored “Makers of Contemporary Islam”, a study examining the diverse and often divergent paths taken by modern Islamic political thought. His more accessible works, from “What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam”to his groundbreaking study with Dalia Mogahed, “Who Speaks for Islam?”, conveyed the same precision and depth to a much wider audience, particularly after 9/11 when the world needed it most. He built bridges where others merely erected civilizational barriers.
