Geneva – Sudanhorizon

The Minister of Digital Transformation and Communications, Ahmed Al-Dirdiri Ghandour, continued his technical meetings on the first day of Sudan’s participation in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum in Geneva, as part of efforts to translate international cooperation into practical projects that enhance the telecommunications sector and internet readiness in Sudan.

The meeting with the Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) addressed ways to activate Resolution 93 issued by the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-25), which pertains to developing the telecommunications sector in Sudan, strengthening its infrastructure, and transitioning it to bankable projects.

The ITU affirmed its readiness to work with Sudan on preparing a comprehensive sector assessment and a document outlining bankable projects, in addition to organizing a roundtable for international partners, which will contribute to mobilizing technical and financial partnerships for the telecommunications and information technology sector. The Minister also discussed with the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) and the Internet Society cooperation in developing internet resources, expanding the use of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), strengthening internet exchange points, and building technical capacity and digital security.

Al-Dirdiri noted that Sudan’s priorities in this phase include developing digital infrastructure, rural connectivity, digital inclusion, and digital services, in addition to leveraging the strategic location of Port Sudan and submarine fiber optic cables to enhance Sudan’s position in regional internet traffic.

These meetings reflect Sudan’s commitment to translating its participation in the WSIS Forum into practical cooperation initiatives that contribute to developing the telecommunications sector, enhancing internet readiness, and establishing a clear roadmap for digital development priorities in the country.
