The Sudan Doctors Network has warned that forces controlling the area west of Bara in North Kordofan State continue preventing the entry of medical supplies, threatening a humanitarian and health catastrophe that could lead to increased mortality rates, especially among children and the most vulnerable groups.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the network said that more than 200,000 citizens, including 20,000 children, west of Bara are suffering from dire conditions due to the spread of cholera and measles, and shortages of medicine and food.
The statement indicated that the Sudan Doctors Network expresses deep concern regarding the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian and health conditions in the areas west of Bara in North Kordofan State, where more than 200,000 citizens, including more than 20,000 children, are facing extremely harsh humanitarian conditions as a result of severe shortages of food and medicine, in addition to the outbreak of measles and cholera.
According to the statement, field reports indicate more than 100 cases of measles among children in several health centers, in addition to 45 cases of cholera, amid a sharp decline in health services and a lack of basic medical supplies.
The network revealed that a number of health facilities are currently operating without any medical supplies, including Taybeh al-Zaatari Hospital, Umm Kridim Hospital, and the health centers of al-Shaqila Awlad Awana, Umm Saadoun al-Nadhir, Umm Dhuban, al-Murra, al-Hajj al-Lin, Damira Abdu, al-Kukiti, al-Qaa, Umm Hajlij, Duwaid, al-Shawq, Umm Ashira, and al-Nabda.
The statement added that the affected administrative units include: Tayba al-Zaatari (approximately 50,000 people), Umm Kridim (50,000), al-Mazroub (40,000), Umm Saadoun (30,000), Damira (25,000), and al-Hajj al-Lin (20,000), bringing the total number of affected people to over 200,000.
The statement reiterated that the Sudanese Doctors Network warns that the “continued disruption of medical and food supplies, and the prevention of supplies from entering the area by the forces controlling it”, threatens a humanitarian and health catastrophe that could lead to increased mortality rates, especially among children and the most vulnerable groups.
The network appealed to the United Nations, humanitarian and relief organizations, and relevant health authorities for immediate and urgent intervention to deliver medicines, intravenous fluids, vaccines, and medical supplies, as well as provide food and safe water, to ensure the containment of disease outbreaks and save the lives of thousands of civilians in the area
