UN HRC Adopts Resolution on El Obeid by Consensus

Geneva –Sudanhorizon

The UN Human Rights Council announced on Monday in its official accounts on X platform that it had adopted Resolution A/HRC/62/L.48 on the human rights situation in and around El Obeid, in the context of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, without a vote.

The Council did not provide any further details at this time. However, according to Reuters, the UN Human Rights Council had adopted a resolution condemning the escalating violence perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the Sudanese city of El Obeid and decided to establish an urgent commission of inquiry into the alleged violations there.

The agency noted that Britain, which submitted the resolution along with 14 other countries, had previously warned of the risk of widespread atrocities as the RSF massed its forces around one of Sudan’s largest cities, in a siege reminiscent of the takeover of El Fasher in North Darfur last year.

The agency quoted Britain’s ambassador for human rights, Eleanor Saunders, as telling the body that these atrocities must not be repeated.
It noted that others, such as South Africa’s ambassador, Zoheir Laher, supported the move, describing the situation as a “red alert,” as the Rapid Support Forces were using the same genocidal tactics they employed in El Fasher.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, had warned last Friday that a “catastrophe” was unfolding around El Obeid, and that his office had documented patterns of summary executions, abductions, torture, and sexual violence in the surrounding area.
