CAF Issues Warnings to National Federations Regarding Club Licensing

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sent a warning to national federations across the continent, emphasizing the need to thoroughly review and scrutinize the files of clubs wishing to participate in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup for the 2026-2027 season.
This review aims to ensure that clubs are completely free of any debts, disputes, or outstanding financial obligations to other parties before being granted a professional club license.
CAF stated that local federations are now partners in this responsibility and are required to examine budgets and financial situations with meticulous precision. The federation warned that any leniency shown by a national federation in granting a license to a club experiencing financial difficulties or possessing outstanding debts and pending cases will subject both the club and the federation itself to severe disciplinary sanctions from CAF’s relevant committees. In cases of serious violations, these sanctions could include the club’s immediate and official exclusion from participating in African competitions and its exclusion from the continental draw.
These warnings coincide with the start of the 2026-2027 season, marking the beginning of a new phase of strict financial oversight and a firm grip imposed by CAF on the football system across the African continent.
Through these mandatory measures and the electronic licensing system, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) aims to strengthen overall governance standards and solidify financial discipline and transparency within African clubs. This presents regionally qualified clubs with a critical challenge: to reschedule their debts and settle their financial accounts quickly to avoid being denied their African dream.
