The Governor of the Gezira Scheme, Ibrahim Mustafa Ali, announced the release of irrigation water from the Sinnar Dam this Sunday, through the two main canals of Gezira and Managil, signaling the start of the new agricultural season for 2026/2027.
During his visit Sunday to the Sinnar Dam, the Governor urged farmers in the Gezira Scheme to adhere to the planting and irrigation schedules as recommended by the Agricultural Research Corporation, to open the “Abu Ashreen” canal, and to expedite the planting and irrigation of summer crops across an area of 1.2 million feddans. These crops include cotton, sorghum, groundnuts, soybeans, lentils, and vegetables.
The Governor emphasized that this season will see adherence to crop rotation guidelines and technical specifications, and the adoption of a collective approach for farmers to cultivate a single crop per plot to ensure organized irrigation, pest control, and the prevention of water wastage outside the designated areas.
For his part, the director of the Sinnar Dam affirmed full cooperation with the Gezira Scheme’s irrigation department to provide irrigation water and ensure the water needs of all agricultural crops are met. This comes amidst the maintenance and rehabilitation of 25 of the dam’s gates, which are now ready for efficient operation.
Furthermore, Mohamed Osman Al-Awad, director of the Gezira Scheme’s irrigation department, confirmed that the flow of water from the Sinnar Dam will continue steadily to prevent water loss outside the irrigation canals and the “Abu Ashreen” canal.
