Successive Regional and International Condemnations of the Ethiopian Attack on Sudan
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
Regional and international condemnations have poured in following the blatant attack carried out by a UAE drone, launched from the Bahir Dar base inside Ethiopian territory, on Khartoum International Airport on Monday.
Egypt, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation all issued separate statements condemning the attack on civilian targets in Sudan and called for an immediate halt to such attacks.
In Doha, Qatar condemned the drone attack on Khartoum International Airport, deeming it a flagrant violation of Sudanese sovereignty and a clear breach of international law and the UN Charter.
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Tuesday, affirmed Qatar’s categorical rejection for targeting civilian infrastructure and vital facilities, and reiterated its full support for the unity, sovereignty, and stability of Sudan.
The Muslim World League strongly condemned the attack targeting Khartoum Airport. A statement issued by the League’s General Secretariat said that the Secretary-General, Chairman of the Council of Muslim Scholars, His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa, reiterated the League’s full solidarity with the Republic of Sudan against all threats to its security, stability, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and legitimate institutions. He stressed the urgent need for an immediate cessation of these violations and adherence to the provisions of the Jeddah Declaration and relevant international laws concerning the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and sparing the Sudanese people and their resources the repercussions of war.
In Cairo, the Arab League condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the targeting of Khartoum Airport by drones launched from bases outside Sudanese territory.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the League’s Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed his strongest condemnation of the attack on Khartoum International Airport using drones. The Secretary-General stressed that targeting civilian facilities and vital infrastructure, this time from bases outside Sudanese territory, constitutes a dangerous escalation and a threat to regional peace and security, exacerbating the humanitarian and security situation in Sudan.
Jamal Rushdi, the Secretary-General’s official spokesperson, quoted Aboul Gheit as affirming the Arab League’s full support for Sudan in preserving its security, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and in maintaining its infrastructure and national institutions.
The Secretary-General also warned that such actions, regardless of their source, aim to broaden the scope of the conflict and undermine Arab, African, and international efforts to de-escalate tensions and create the conditions for an inclusive Sudanese civil dialogue that preserves Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and fulfills the aspirations of its people for security, peace, and stability.
